Above all, it is someone who values having relationships with each team member. With solid relationships establish, a boss can expect bidirectional trust which allows for open/honest conversations. Having a "safe place" to express ideas with fearing negative outcomes invites innovation, productivity, ownership and commitment. A great boss understands that it is the people they support and work alongside who ultimately determine the success or failure of any endeavor. What is your yardstick for success? The short answer is through measurable desired results. Example: was the project completed on time, according to customer expectations and on budget? However, it is not just in "what the results are" but in "how were the results achieved?" There have been times where projects were delivered on time but it took several team members working double time to meet deadlines. It meant that at the end of the project, team members resigned or asked to be transferred to other areas of an organization. Other factors that are important me regarding "success" are: did team members improve their skills; did we strengthen relationships with internal and external customers; did we identify ways to enhance team cohesion and improve performance to carry into future initiatives, etc... What are your long-term professional goals? My long range goal is to become CEO of a health service organization. |
